SOLR Browse Error after upgrade to 3.2 from 1.8.2

Hilton Gibson-2
Hi All

==System==
DSpace 3.2. Ubuntu 12.04. Upgraded to 3.2 last week from DSpace 1.8.2.

==Problem==
My java programming skills are virtually non-existent.
Can someone please tell me why this error occurs for users in our "Cataloguers" group.
If it is some basic config error, that I can fix.
Help appreciated.

Re: SOLR Browse Error after upgrade to 3.2 from 1.8.2

Hi Hilton,

the first things that I notice is that the URL is quite long (12883
characters URI-encoded), which can easily be a problem in itself (HTTP
414: Request-URI Too Large). That would be consistent with one group
(query) causing this and the rest not. Anyway, this is just a message
from DSpace reporting a generic message from Solr. To verify, look
into Tomcat's logs to see the Solr's message.

If you really need this large a group (query), you can configure
Tomcat to allow for longer queries (with all the dangers it might
present):

Thx Helix.

Will check further.
Do I need to debug mode for the log?

Cheers

In reply to this post by helix84
And just for me.
What is this query about.
The error occurs when a member of the group clicks on any of the "Browse by" links.
I know there is split now for the indexes in 3.2, SOLR does "Simple" and "Advanced" search.
Are the "Browse by" indexes still in the SQL DB?

Cheers

Hi All

==System==
DSpace 3.2. Ubuntu 12.04. Upgraded to 3.2 last week from DSpace 1.8.2.

==Problem==
My java programming skills are virtually non-existent.
Can someone please tell me why this error occurs for users in our "Cataloguers" group.
If it is some basic config error, that I can fix.
Help appreciated.

In 3.x: Solr logs are in catalina.out by default; even if you enabled
Solr, "browse by" uses DB tables by default (see
browseDAO.class/browseCreateDAO.class in dspace.cfg)
In 4.x: Solr logs are in catalina.out when you increase level to
DEBUG; Solr is enabled by default for everything including "browse by"

I could tell you more about why a Solr query is fired there if you
send me the stack trace above "Caused by".

More info.

So SOLR now handles ALL the indexes as I have configured it - correct?

I am getting a lot these in the catalina log file.

I will bump it up to 16384 and see.
Will let you know.

Correct, both search and browse are now handled by Solr. itemcounter
is still handled by database (Solr backend is available since DSpace
4).

Not a problem, ignore them. In rare cases it might be the consequence
of a problem.

Yes, it's the maxHttpHeaderSize attribute.

Also consider making your group smaller instead (e.g. by breaking it
up into more groups).

What's the rest of the original stack trace?

This is the repo managers choice. Will discuss with her.

Just bumped it up and it works now if I login as one of the group.

Going to update this wiki doc quickly and then ask one of the group to test with a native login.

Will let you know what happens.

Cheers

Re: SOLR Browse Error after upgrade to 3.2 from 1.8.2

a.bollini
I have seen this thread only now...
the issue is related to the right awareness feature introduced in discovery and affect both the search and the browse system (when solrbrowsedao are used, optionally in 3.x, by default in 4.0).
The group composition doesn't really matter, the issue here is that a single user is included in several group that mean that the solr query will include a filter to limit the results to only items that are visible by group1, group2, .... groupN.
If the number of group is hight you can reach the HTTP header limit already managed in this thread or a tooManyClause Exception in solr, that can be "solved" incrementing this parameter.
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/blob/master/dspace/solr/search/conf/solrconfig.xml#L474
When the number is to large you could also consider to disable the awareness right feature, commenting this line
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/blob/master/dspace/config/spring/api/discovery.xml#L25
Hope this help,
Andrea
